Terezin
About
Terezin was founded at the end of the 18th century by Emperor Joseph II, originally as an ingenious system of the military fortresses for the protection of the Bohemian Kingdom. During World War II, in 1940, the Gestapo took control of Terezin, and the town was turned into a Jewish ghetto. The Nazis tried to make the concentration camp look like a model Jewish settlement, but in reality it was a concentration camp. The Gestapo turned the fortress just outside the town into a prison for political prisoners and the town of Terezin that before the war inhabited 7000 people was turned into a jewish ghetto of 60.000.
